47 Herders Apprehended Following Violent Polytechnic Incursion in Kebbi

The Kebbi State Police Command announced the arrest of 47 herders on charges of criminal trespass and attempted culpable homicide after a violent incident at the Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic in Birnin Kebbi.

According to CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the incident unfolded around 3:00 a.m. on February 4, 2025, when Abubakar Nabande, a resident of the Ruggar Labana area, allegedly conspired with accomplices to forcefully enter the polytechnic grounds. Armed with cutlasses and sticks, the herders broke through the school’s fence, driving more than 300 cows onto the campus. They then proceeded to the staff quarters, where they caused significant damage by destroying stored hay.

The situation escalated when polytechnic staff and security personnel attempted to evict the intruders. During the confrontation, one staff member, Abdullahi Muhammad Idris, was attacked with a cutlass, sustaining fractures on his right hand and leg. Idris is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi.

Following the report of the incident, Commissioner of Police Bello M. Sani personally led a team of detectives to the scene for an immediate assessment. Subsequent investigations resulted in the arrest of 47 suspects linked to the attack, who have now been charged for prosecution.

The Kebbi State Police Command reassured the public of its steadfast commitment to delivering justice and maintaining peace throughout the state.
