Canada Visa Snub Sparks Outrage from FG, Ex-Envoys

The Federal Government and former diplomats have condemned Canada's decision to deny visas to top Nigerian military officials, including Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa.

At the National Association of the Institute for Security Studies lecture in Abuja, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu labeled the move as 'disrespectful,' adding that Canada 'can go to hell.'

Gen. Musa, blocked from attending a Canadian event honoring war veterans, called it a 'wake-up call' for Nigeria to assert its sovereignty. Ribadu supported Musa, urging Nigeria to strengthen internally.

Former Ambassador Rasheed Akinkuolie emphasized that such high-ranking officials should hold diplomatic passports, and any visa denial warrants reciprocal actions by Nigeria. He recommended summoning the Canadian High Commissioner for an explanation.

Retired Ambassador Mohammed Mabdul called the denial 'highly undiplomatic,' urging reconsideration to maintain friendly relations. However, ex-Ambassador Yemi Farounbi criticized Ribadu's undiplomatic response, suggesting that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should have handled the issue through proper channels.

The Canadian High Commission is expected to issue a response today.
