Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the former Governor of Ekiti State, recently downplayed the intensity of political conflicts, insisting that such rivalries are more about public amusement than genuine hostility. Speaking at his 60th birthday thanksgiving service at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Isan Ekiti on Sunday, Fayemi remarked that the political clashes circulating on social media are largely exaggerated for entertainment purposes.
“To be clear, everything you see on social media is just for your entertainment,” he explained.
To drive home his point, Fayemi highlighted the presence of former Governor Segun Oni at the event. “Many might wonder why Governor Segun Oni is here. I spent the entire day with him on my birthday. Had Governor Ayodele Fayose been available, he would have joined us as well,” he noted.
Fayemi emphasized that, regardless of party lines, politicians in Ekiti do not view one another as adversaries. “Our goal has always been to build a united Ekiti, transcending political divisions. Whether we belong to different parties or share affiliations like the Ekiti Party and the Ekiti Progressive Party, we are united by a common vision—one that our current governor is upholding,” he stated.
Reflecting on his personal journey and milestone birthday, Fayemi expressed deep gratitude. “I am a product of grace, and there are countless reasons to thank God at 60,” he said.
He also commended Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji for fostering a friendly political atmosphere. “Circumstances might have been different, but Governor Oyebanji, like me, is a product of grace. Despite the challenges inherent in politics, we have cultivated a relationship based on mutual love and respect,” Fayemi added.
The celebration also recognized Fayemi’s significant contributions to Nigerian politics. President Bola Tinubu was among those who honored him, praising his pivotal role in modern Nigerian politics, especially his involvement in the 2013 merger that resulted in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The event saw the attendance of several prominent political figures, including former Governor Segun Oni, Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly Adeoye Aribasoye, and Ekiti’s first civilian Governor, Niyi Adebayo.
