Embattled Lagos lawmaker Mudashiru Obasa has taken legal action to contest his removal as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa has sued the Assembly and new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, at a State High Court in Ikeja, arguing that his ousting during the Assembly's recess was unlawful.
In a motion filed on February 12, 2025, through his counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, Obasa requested an accelerated hearing and urged the court to shorten the response period for defendants to seven days.
Obasa, removed by 36 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, during his absence abroad, returned to declare himself the rightful Speaker. He is seeking an expedited ruling on the constitutionality of the Assembly's session during recess without proper authorization, citing violations of the Nigerian Constitution and Assembly Standing Orders.
His motion emphasizes that a swift resolution is critical to prevent disruption of legislative activities in Lagos State. The court has yet to set a date for the hearing.
