Revolutionizing Medical Education: FG Urged to Adopt Simulation Technology, Establish Cutting-Edge Centres

The Federal Government has been urged to integrate medical simulation technology into Nigeria’s education curriculum and establish world-class medical simulation centres across the country, with at least one in each geopolitical zone.

This recommendation was presented in a report by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Adhoc Committee on Medical Simulation and Innovation Interventions, which outlined the urgent need for modernized medical training to enhance healthcare delivery.

Presenting the report in Abuja, Prof. Wale Sulaiman, a world-renowned neurosurgeon and chairman of the committee, emphasized that investing in medical simulation would significantly boost Nigeria’s capacity to address major health challenges, including non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, accident and emergency care, trauma management, infectious disease outbreaks, and surgical procedures.

He further stressed the urgent need for healthcare regulatory bodies to integrate medical simulation into their training curriculum and recognize it as a key component of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and proficiency training.

“The absence of simulation centres is severely limiting the ability to train healthcare workers effectively. We must also embrace AI-driven diagnostics, telemedicine, and remote patient monitoring to improve healthcare accessibility nationwide,” Sulaiman stated.

The committee estimated the cost of setting up each state-of-the-art medical simulation centre to be between ₦4 billion to ₦6 billion, subject to inflationary trends.

Receiving the report, Chairman, TETFund Board of Trustees, Aminu Bello Masari, commended the committee’s dedication and assured them of swift implementation of their recommendations. He emphasized that AI and simulation-based learning are the future, and Nigeria must not be left behind.

Similarly, TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc Sonny Echono, lauded the committee for its commitment and timely submission of the report, which he described as a blueprint for transforming medical education in Nigeria.
