Tinubu Takes Charge: Ministers Set for Weekly Transparency Briefings

The Presidency announced a new initiative following concerns that some ministers have not adequately accounted for their stewardship. President Bola Tinubu has ordered all cabinet members to conduct regular press briefings to update Nigerians on government policies and activities.

Starting next week, ministers will provide consistent public updates, as disclosed by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, during a press conference in Abuja. “This directive is about ensuring transparency and accountability. Every minister must now share key developments, address public concerns, and combat misinformation,” he explained.

Idris highlighted the success of last year’s efforts, noting that in 2024, 25 ministers reached millions of Nigerians at home and abroad through both traditional and digital media. “2025 is a year of consolidation, building on the impressive gains from the first 19 months of our administration,” he added.

While some speculate that this move could signal a review of ministerial performance ahead of Tinubu’s second anniversary, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed such claims. “The President’s call for regular updates has always been about accountability—not a precursor to a cabinet reshuffle,” Onanuga affirmed.

An anonymous source close to the President echoed this sentiment, clarifying, “These briefings are part of an ongoing practice and will not serve as the sole basis for performance assessments.”
