The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned officers of the Nigeria Police Force against unlawful arrests and prolonged detention of suspects, stressing strict adherence to legal and constitutional provisions.
In a statement on Sunday, Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi quoted the IG as emphasizing that suspects must not be held beyond the legally stipulated periods. He warned that any officer found guilty of such violations would face severe disciplinary measures.
Egbetokun noted that arbitrary detentions erode public trust and urged officers to carry out their duties with professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights. He referenced Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee the right to dignity and personal liberty, as fundamental guidelines that police officers must uphold.
“The Inspector-General of Police has issued a stern reminder to all officers on the importance of respecting fundamental rights in pre-trial detentions. Adherence to legal detention periods is not just a legal requirement but a core aspect of upholding the dignity and rights of individuals,” Adejobi stated.
The IG further warned against practices that undermine public confidence in the police, reiterating that any violations would attract serious consequences. He urged officers to maintain a culture of accountability and uphold the highest standards of conduct in their interactions with the public.
Reaffirming the police leadership’s commitment to human rights, Adejobi assured that the Force remains dedicated to ensuring suspects in custody are treated with dignity and in full compliance with the law.
