President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the late Prof.
Humphrey Nwosu, former chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission
(NEC), describing him as a statesman who will be remembered for his unwavering
commitment to a democratic Nigeria.
Speaking at Nwosu’s funeral service at St. Mark’s Anglican
Church, Ajalli, Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State, on Friday,
President Tinubu—represented by the Minister of Works, Engr. David
Umahi—highlighted the late professor’s lasting impact on Nigeria’s democratic
evolution.
He urged Nigerians to uphold the values of integrity,
patriotism, and dedication to democratic ideals, which defined Nwosu’s public
service.
In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media to the
Minister, Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, Tinubu extended condolences to Nwosu’s
family, the government, and the people of Anambra State.
"As we mourn Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, we must also
celebrate his profound contributions as a public administrator, political
scientist, and electoral reformer. His legacy will endure for
generations," Tinubu stated.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing
key economic sectors to drive national development, assuring Nigerians that the
country's economy is on a path to sustainable growth.
"Despite the challenges we inherited, our economy is
recovering, and our democracy continues to strengthen. My administration
remains steadfast in delivering the benefits of democracy to all
Nigerians," Tinubu assured.
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, also paid
homage to Nwosu, recalling his pioneering role in introducing the Option A4
voting system and the Open Ballot system, which were instrumental in
conducting one of Nigeria’s most credible elections. He encouraged Nwosu’s family, community, and
associates to uphold the values he championed throughout his lifetime.
