Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has been omitted from the squad for today’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United, following a challenging week. Turkish shot-stopper Altay Bayındır is set to make his Premier League debut in his absence.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Onana was informed of the decision by manager Rúben Amorim after Manchester United’s UEFA Europa League match against Olympique Lyon. Amorim advised the Cameroonian to take a short mental break from football.
“André Onana won’t even be on the bench for Man United today as Rúben Amorim wanted him to disconnect from football after a difficult week,” Romano reported Sunday on X.
Despite his absence today, Onana is expected to return for the second leg of United’s Europa League tie on Thursday.
Jamie Jackson of The Guardian also confirmed that Onana did not travel with the squad to Newcastle. His absence opens the door for Bayındır, a summer signing, to make a notable impression as he starts between the posts.
