El-Rufai Deserves Fair Treatment After Supporting Tinubu – Buhari’s Ex-Minister Shittu

Adebayo Shittu, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and former Minister of Communications, speaks about his ambition to govern Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde’s succession plans, President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 election prospects, and other political matters in an interview with Adebayo Folorunsho-Francis.

On His Appointment as Pro-Chancellor of Dave Umahi Federal University

Shittu shares that his appointment as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Dave Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences in Ebonyi State was unexpected. While initially hoping for a more executive role, he embraced the position and aims to help the university thrive. Despite concerns about security in Igboland, Shittu finds Ebonyi peaceful and welcoming. He credits the university's management for their collaboration and expresses his commitment to fostering the institution's growth.

Addressing Allegations of Lobbying for the Position

Shittu denies lobbying for the role, stating his extensive political career—having served as a commissioner and minister—precluded him from such actions. Though he had hoped for an executive role where he could apply his 45 years of experience, he is now focused on excelling in his new position.

Political Ambitions and Oyo Governorship

When asked about his political future, Shittu confirms his ambition to become the governor of Oyo State. Inspired by the legacy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he plans to implement Awolowo's four cardinal programs: free education, free health services, infrastructure development, and full employment. Shittu believes that the people of Oyo would benefit from his leadership, and he is determined to offer governance that addresses the needs of the average citizen.

On Governor Makinde’s Successor Plans

Regarding Governor Makinde's efforts to impose a successor, Shittu dismisses the idea, saying only God determines who gets power. He believes Makinde's attempts to dictate the future of Oyo's leadership are misguided and expresses confidence that God will guide his own political journey.

Marginalization of Non-Ibadan Regions in Oyo Politics

Shittu acknowledges the longstanding dominance of Ibadan indigenes in Oyo State's governorship but argues that other regions, particularly Oke-Ogun, deserve a chance at leadership. He highlights the importance of rotation to ensure fairness and political balance across the state’s various regions. He contends that Oke-Ogun, with its population and historical role in producing deputy governors, should be considered for future leadership.

On the Sharia Council’s Allegations of Marginalization

Shittu responds to concerns raised by the Sharia Council regarding the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the Tinubu administration. While acknowledging some frustrations, he asserts that the President is making efforts to ensure fairness in his appointments. He believes the issue is more prominent in Yoruba land than in other regions, where Muslims are receiving key roles in the government.

On El-Rufai’s Discontent

Reflecting on former Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s grievances over perceived neglect by Tinubu, Shittu affirms that El-Rufai played a crucial role in securing northern support for Tinubu’s presidential bid. Shittu suggests that Tinubu should work to reconcile with El-Rufai, noting the importance of maintaining alliances with key political figures.

On Other Aggrieved Politicians

When discussing other disgruntled figures like Rotimi Amaechi, Salihu Lukman, and Babachir Lawal, Shittu offers differing views. He criticizes Amaechi for his bitterness following his primary loss, calling his accusations against Tinubu baseless. He expresses disappointment with Babachir Lawal’s stance, suggesting that Tinubu’s vice-presidential choice was strategic, considering electoral realities, rather than based on religious favoritism.

Tinubu’s Prospects for Re-election in 2027

Shittu predicts a 75% chance of Tinubu winning a second term in 2027, citing the positive impact of key initiatives such as the NELFUND project and the First Lady’s efforts to support women. Despite challenges, including public dissatisfaction with the fuel subsidy removal, Shittu believes Tinubu’s record of infrastructure development and social programs will contribute to his success.

On Opposition Challenges in 2027

Shittu dismisses the possibility of significant opposition in 2027, noting that parties like the PDP and Labour Party are fragmented. He downplays the threat of Peter Obi’s continued influence, stating that the Labour Party is in disarray and its chances of mounting a serious challenge are slim.

On APC’s Failure to Refund Nomination Fees

Shittu recalls his experience with the APC’s failure to refund nomination fees after he was persuaded to withdraw from the 2022 National Convention. Despite this, he remains loyal to the party and has no plans to pursue legal action. He hopes to secure the APC’s governorship ticket for Oyo State in the upcoming election.

On Adebayo Adelabu’s Governorship Ambition

Shittu responds to rumors that Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, is being favored for the Oyo governorship ticket. While respecting Adelabu, Shittu warns that imposing him could lead to political discontent, especially among non-Ibadan regions. He emphasizes the importance of fairness and rotation within the party.

In conclusion, Shittu reaffirms his commitment to running for governor of Oyo State and contributing to the state’s development, while also urging fairness and unity within the APC.
