Gani Adams Urges Government to Prioritise Tourism

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland and National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Gani Adams, has called on both the Federal and state governments to increase their investment in tourism by promoting Nigeria’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. He noted that this would not only boost the nation’s foreign earnings but also open up vast economic opportunities.

Adams made this call on Friday during the Olumo Festival, held at the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of the ongoing Lisabi Festival. He applauded the people of Egbaland for their commitment to preserving tradition through the annual Lisabi Festival, which, according to him, is projected to contribute about N10 billion to Nigeria’s economy this year.

Describing tourism as a “gold mine that can never be exhausted,” Adams stressed that, unlike finite mineral resources, tourism can continuously generate revenue and employment if properly managed. He emphasized that insecurity remains a major threat to developing the tourism sector and urged the government to address the issue urgently.

“The Federal and state governments must increase their investment in tourism. They need to create historical and recreational sites across the country to attract both local and international tourists,” Adams said. “One of the biggest challenges we face in this regard is insecurity. If the government can provide a secure and enabling environment and reorient our youth away from criminal activities, Nigeria has immense tourism potential.”

Citing international examples, Adams noted, “Thailand attracts 40 million tourists annually, while Britain records 45 million visits. Nigeria must begin to transition from dependence on mineral resources to a tourism-driven economy.”

He praised the Olumo Festival as a symbol of unity and a homecoming event for Egba sons and daughters across the globe. He added that such cultural festivals promote unity, progress, and national cohesion, and pledged continued support for efforts aimed at preserving the nation’s cultural heritage.

In his remarks, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, congratulated the people of Egbaland on the celebration of the Lisabi Festival. He encouraged them to continue living in peace and to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state and the nation.

The monarch also appreciated Governor Dapo Abiodun for his recent promise to refurbish the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre and repair its three faulty elevators, thereby improving tourism infrastructure in the state.
