Kano Uncovers ₦28m Payroll Fraud in Local Government System

The Kano State Government has uncovered irregularities in the payroll system of local government councils, revealing that at least 247 staff members who had either retired or died were still listed and receiving salaries.

The fraudulent salary payments amounted to ₦27,824,395.40 for March 2025 alone.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Musa Muhammad, Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government, and made available to us on Saturday.

“In a decisive move towards cleansing the state payroll, the Kano State Government has recorded a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to reform the salary administration system within the state civil service,” the statement read.

It further explained that the discovery came from a validation exercise, which exposed the ongoing salary payments to the deceased and retired individuals.

“In a prompt and effective response, and while further due diligence is being conducted to determine the full extent of the fraud and identify the perpetrators, the amount has been recovered and returned to the Local Government Treasury,” the statement added.

The government emphasized that the recovery highlights its commitment to promoting transparency, responsible management of public resources, and good governance.

It also stressed that individuals found culpable in the fraudulent activity would be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
