A bomb explosion that occurred on Taiwo Street, Idi-Araba, in the Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State was caused by a scavenger attempting to dismantle military-grade grenades.
The blast, which took place on April 3, 2025, claimed the life of the scavenger instantly and left three others injured. The identity of the deceased scavenger remains unknown, while the injured individuals, whose names and addresses are also yet to be disclosed, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigations revealed that the scavenger was collecting scrap metal and had discovered military-grade grenades among the items. While trying to force one open, it detonated, resulting in the deadly explosion.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit received a distress call at 1:30 p.m. and immediately mobilised a team of EOD-CBRN operatives from Ikeja to the scene.
“On arrival, the team secured the area and conducted a thorough inspection. It was confirmed that the explosion was caused by military-grade grenades tampered with by a scavenger trying to dismantle one. The scavenger died on the spot, while three others were injured and taken to a nearby hospital,” Hundeyin said.
He added that the scene was fully secured, photographed, and essential evidence was recovered for further investigation. The body of the deceased has been deposited in a public morgue for autopsy, and a formal investigation is ongoing.
“Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses,” Hundeyin concluded.
