Van Dijk Predicts ‘Big Summer’ for Liverpool as New Deal Nears Completion

Virgil van Dijk has hinted at a busy transfer window ahead for Liverpool, expressing confidence in the club’s plans while reportedly nearing a new two-year contract extension that will keep him at Anfield.

Speaking after scoring the winning goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday — a result that puts the Reds on the brink of a record-equalling 20th English league title — Van Dijk said he believes the club is preparing for a significant summer overhaul.

Liverpool currently sit 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with just six matches left. The title could be secured as early as next weekend, depending on other results.

Van Dijk’s new contract is expected to be announced later this week and will reportedly mirror Mohamed Salah’s recently renewed two-year deal. The 33-year-old Dutch defender also marked his 100th league game as Liverpool captain during the West Ham clash.

Last summer saw limited transfer activity, with forward Federico Chiesa being the only major outfield signing — and he has played a minimal role this season. New manager Arne Slot is now expected to make several key additions.

“I think Liverpool should be able to challenge for titles in the coming years,” said Van Dijk. “Whatever happens — players going out or coming in — it should be a big summer. I believe that’s the plan, and we all have to trust the board to do what’s best.”

He added, “There’s always room to improve. Let’s not forget how much quality the Premier League has. This season especially, it’s shown how anyone can beat anyone.”

Van Dijk also noted that Liverpool will benefit from a full pre-season without major international tournaments, giving the squad time to gel under Slot’s leadership.

“This year we’ll have a training camp, time to really work on what the manager wants,” he said. “That will help us become even more consistent.”

As he closes in on becoming just the second Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League trophy, Van Dijk reaffirmed his deep connection with the club.

“Being successful with Liverpool — it’s part of who I am,” he said. “I love the club. That’s clear in the way I speak about it, the way I play, and how I carry myself on and off the pitch. That will never change.
